Researching your Family Tree

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Alastair Harris Researching your family history can be a very personally fulfilling adventure. It can throw up surprizes and let skeletons out of the family tree. In your family history you might have royalty, knights, pirates, convicts, executed persons, rich people, poor people. Researching you family tree can take you all over the world. Broaden your perspective, learn more about who you are. It also might teach you respect for the sacrifices of others to help you to where you are today, or at least broaden your perspective due to the fact you are likely to come across a variety of people who in a small part make you - you. Further it can help you appreciate that all humans are just distant relatives. Consider this is you go back 20 generations (assuming of course there are merging branches which there will be) you quickly get to one million ancestors - thats alot of people. In other words take any person/stranger sitting next to you at random and you will probably be linked somewhere in the past - there just weren’t that many people living over 1000 years ago compared to our now current 6 billion world family. The point is this - with this in mind it becomes clear that as human beings we are just one big family. How do you research your own family history? You can start by asking your oldest relations to start mapping your family tree. Then go to government records, births, deaths and marriages, etc to fill in more details and go back further. Your local library can be a surprizing help as well. But by far the greatest source for researching genealogy is the internet. Believe it or not genealogy is one of the biggest topics on the internet and you might be luckly and find someone has already done much of the work for you. Cindy’s list and others are a gold mine. How To Decrease Tuition Costs For College

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Theresa Johnson As an alumnus of a private college in Chicago I am fully aware of the cost to attend college. Many of the students I come in contact with complain that tuition is too high. I have seen many of their financial plans. Many are required to pay $500-$3000 per month in order to continue their studies. Some have no choice but to drop out because they are unable to pay. 1. Consider going to a community college As a 1989 high school graduate I knew I wasnt ready for college. My parents were unable to afford the high cost of college tuition so I decided to attend a junior college. Since my income was next to nothing and I was living on my own I qualified for every grant available. 2. Consider a part-time job This is a great way to offset the cost of your tuition while obtaining experience. There are a number of resources you can use to obtain a part-time job to help pay a for a portion of your college tuition. Visit http://www.monster.com, http://www.craigslist.com or http://www.careerbuilder.com to locate part-time employment in your area. There are also organizations which will assist you in finding employment. Jobs for Youth is a non-profit organization which assist individuals in obtaining the skills necessary in order to find employment. Residents of Chicago can visit http://www.jfychicago.org/ for more information. 3. Find a job that offers tuition reimbursement Most employers offer tuition reimbursement to their employees as a perk or incentive. Typically you are required to complete one year or more of employment before you are able to utilize tuition reimbursement. Tuition reimbursement usually cover between 50-100% of your tuition costs and books. Some employers require that you continue to work for at least 1-2 years after graduation. You also must keep a certain grade point average in order to continue receiving tuition reimbursement. Theresa Johnson is a Career Advisor for a private college in Chicago. Relationship– Delicate and Dedicate

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By Sri Nachimuthu Salutations to those of my loved ones, who made me, feel them as my resources, rather than liabilities. Relationships we have in this world are explained in different ways. Some explain them as headache and some as caretakers and some even dont know who they are all. But to say truly relationships we have in this world are resources, for us to benefit together. So such relationships are like a vast land, which should be nurtured and/or managed properly. If left uncultivated weeds and other wanted things grow in the uncultivated land, and we cannot enjoy the fruit out of it. The main key to relationships is the Reciprocity/ Mutuality i.e. Give and take. The relationship will not be smooth when always one person gives or receives. In any relationship, we should exchange the currency of what each others value. Nurturing relationship can be done by caring, sharing and loving. This nurturing can be done keeping in touch with our loved ones, sharing with them at least some time with them, and one should never show oneself to be too busy that he cannot spend at least few minutes with them. Relationship thus is a function of co-operation and communication. Always in relationships some friction and misunderstanding occurs. It is natural. But in such a situation, always any one should come forward and take initiative to put an end to it or else if left unattended, the relationship will be there just for namesake. Even if attended, if taken to a third person for solving the situation it still gets worsened and this small reason is enough to create a crack in the relationship. So in such a crisis it is better to lose ones pride to the one we love, than to lose the one we love due to the pride. In our life there are very rare chances that we will meet a person, whom we love and loves us in return. So just for the sake of small mishaps or faults never abandon your loved ones, because you may never get a person who can replace their position. Always in relationships, look in to ones own faults and good thing in others. In love relationships it always happens that we expect a lot from our loved ones and we generally possess the possessiveness for him/her. This possessiveness should always be handled carefully, because it will make our loved ones feel more restricted and denied of his/her freedom to be what they wanted to be. This further might aggravate the suspicious tendency that he/she will leave us and go. So we try to protect them by trying to be more caring and loving. But when we confront someone with whom our loved ones are quite close and friendly, we conform that they will move away and we tend to avoid and withdraw from them. Later this avoidance and withdrawal will be interpreted as being abandoned and a long communication gap will be created. Thus from avoiding and disliking the actions of the person will get converted into dislike towards that person as such. This process can be represented diagrammatically as: Closeness—Expectations—Disappointment—Mourning–Yearning for the loved ones–Frustration—Aggression—Hatred towards that persons act—Withdrawal—Avoidance–Disparity—Hatred towards that person(not totally, because it is not possible) Sometimes a clash between two close persons may be loved ones or friends might result in slightly different form and they might be separated. In such a case it will be too worse because each other know about the other persons strength and weakness. It can be represented diagrammatically as: Closeness—Expectations—Disappointment—Mourning———— –Frustration—Aggression—Withdrawal—Avoidance–Do what that person doesnt like–Join with those he/she doesnt like— –Two groups formed—Politics and war of ego starts Though love is an irresistible desire to be desired irresistibly, try to handle it carefully and delicately. Respect each others emotions and feelings and let them free and do not try to find fault with them and hurt them. Every one of us should remember this, DO NOT HURT THE LOVE THAT LOVES YOU AND DO NOT LOVE THE LOVE THAT HURTS YOU. If handling people is understood then life in this earth will be happy and peaceful and we can make a heaven out of this present world. By P. Monday, February 25th, 2008

By Dawn Fowler Does giving housewarming gifts strike fear in you? Fear that the receiver will think that your gift is boring or unappealing or simply will not like it? There is hope for you! Think out of the box, out of the registry, out of the regular stores. Choose a gift that “speaks” to the receiver. How do you do this? By choosing a gift that expresses the personality of the recipient, you are giving them something that will “speak” to them and that they will forever love. Need some housewarming gift ideas? Make getting and sending mail fun! Hand painted mailboxes are excellent housewarming gifts because a mailbox is the first thing that people see when they pass by or pull into your driveway. You can find mailboxes that will delight anyone from the beach lover to the golf lover to a gardener. This would be an excellent housewarming gift that the recipient will delight in receiving. “Welcome” them to their new home. Create Long Term Memories With Your Wedding Guest Book

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Chris Ryerson Long after the wedding is over, the cake has been eaten, the presents opened, and the guest have left you will have your wedding guest book. This is a very important part of the wedding because it will be one of the most important mementos of your special wedding day. It is the one thing that you will go back to time and again to spark the memories and relive your special day. This can also be a very useful reminder of why you wanted to get married and hopefully a little light at the end of a tunnel through some difficult times if need be. In fact many couples today have more then one wedding guestbook. However they both serve a little different purpose. There is the traditional wedding guestbook that was present at the wedding where all of the family signed in and then another one that was used at the reception. Today many couples are opted for a smaller service and a bigger reception. This way the service can be for very close family and a few friends but the reception can include a bunch of people and become a real hopping party. By having two guest books you can make sure everyone signs their name in the guest book and hopefully leave a little message. The most traditional type of wedding guest book of course is the white book with a white feather pen for guest to sign their name, leave an address and even a little personalized message. However, there is nothing to say you have to stick with tradition and you might want to find a guest book that better fits the theme of your wedding or even the colors of your wedding. Today you can find a wide variety of guest books in just about any color you choose. Also you can find a wide variety of non traditional wedding guest books that are not even books but rather other objects that people can sign. Another type of wedding guest book might be a scrapbook. A friend of mine had one of these at her wedding and she didnt even know it until the wedding reception. One of her bridesmaids had purchased a large scrapbook and then decorated the front cover and the first page with pictures of the bride and groom at different times in their relationship together. She then left the rest of the pages blank. Guest were then able to not only sign the book but leave any type of message that they wanted. The best thing about this was some of the more artistic guest felt encouraged by the blank page and took the time to put in fun poems, sayings and even small art work. This has become one of her most treasured possessions and something she often goes back to look at. Another fun option can be easily put together with a large poster board with a few pictures of the couple mounted to it. Again you can encourage guests to sign the poster board and leave a message or saying next to their signatures. You probably can not find this type of guest book at our local wedding supply store however more companies and creating alternative wedding guest book ideas and you can easily find one online. If you can not find something that suits your particular situation these ideas can easily be made with very little expense or time. As with many things these days wedding guest books can be found in a variety of different places. If you can not find what you are looking for locally try searching on the internet. There are more and more companies selling very specialized products on the internet due to the low overhead. You will be surprised at the wide variety of options out there if you just take some time to look around. While you are shopping dont forget to pick up a great pen to use for the signatures. Something Casual versus Something Serious

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

By Vittorio Norman “I don’t do relationships…but we can still hang out if you like” “I don’t want a relationship…so if you still want to hang out that’s great, but if not that’s cool too” There is no reason to lie, spin, or redirect the topic. You just lay it out simply and clearly. You are not being crude. Everyone knows that no-relationship implies something casual, so there is no reason to spell it out. It only becomes a problem if that person reacts badly and starts getting defensive. In this case you cut your losses and move on. They accept your frame and there is no room for discussion. Therefore there is no room for debate on: “I’m not easy you know” “I don’t want a relationship either, but I should tell you I don’t sleep with guys on the first date” These might seem like reasonable objections but they are not. Accepting them or trying to compromise means that you are not firm in your beliefs and that makes you weak. Simply cut your losses and move on. It is obvious that person wants the upper hand. People all over are meeting and interacting with no agenda whatsoever, so there is no reason to feel that you are doing anything wrong. So stick to your guns and stick with those people who fit in with your plans. You will be much happier because of it. How to Plan a Family Reunion

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By Kristy Annely Planning takes thoughtfulness and effort. And planning a family reunion is no exception! Just as if you were throwing a party for friends, you will want to make sure there is plenty to eat and drink, and some fu activities planned for the entire time. A family reunion is a memorable event that everyone looks forward to. It brings your family and relatives together, so it is of the utmost importance that it is planned properly to make it fun. Family reunions should be planned on a theme of common interest to which everyone in the family can relate. Chose a theme like family ancestry, and then share personal experiences and photographs. While organizing the family reunion, don’t think that you alone can do everything. Instead, delegate responsibilities to others. This gives other family members a feel of ownership, gets everyone to interact, makes everyone feel important, and makes the reunion an unforgettable event. Forgetting all differences and completing tasks together, such as representing the same team in a game, creates a sense of togetherness. For complete satisfaction, at the end of the reunion, it is important that the reunion is completely planned and structured. Plan details like which place to go, when to go, and how long the reunion lasts. Important decisions and limitations should be discussed prior to the reunion, because everyone has a different lifestyle and their own way of living. You should avoid any conflicts during the reunion, which may hamper the fun and excitement of the reunion. Anxiety Warning Signs

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By Jim Sullivan How do you know when you are suffering from background anxiety? Its important to be aware of the warning signs, because excessive levels of anxiety can disrupt your performance, stifle joy and lead to depression and illness. A good test of a persons physical fitness lies in their ability to do the things our ancestors did, routinely. So youre physically fit if you can run slowly for several miles without getting out of breath, climb, hunt wild animals . . . you get the picture. Perhaps youve stopped reading already, daunted by this test of physical fitness, but we know, deep down, that were built for that kind of activity. Its what your human frame was designed for. So what about anxiety? What is the equivalent test of normality which we should apply when deciding whether we are over-stressed? I would propose the following list. I dont claim that its scientific, but I would defend it as a pragmatic and practical list of qualities. These are the conditions which each one of us can aspire to. A reasonably relaxed person : Doesnt procrastinate Is open to spontaneous suggestions Looks forward to the weekend . . . and looks forward to the working week Feels that they have plenty of time Moves gracefully Enjoys their food Sleeps well Good balance of time between family, personal and working lives Fit Efficient Looks forward to challenges Not readily affected by criticism Not particularly susceptible to vices such as overeating, smoking, heavy drinking Open and courteous How did you do? Dont worry too much if you struggled. It isnt unusual for people to struggle with half of the items on this list. Turn this around for a moment and think about the gains to be achieved when you do learn to relax. Think how pleasant it would be to feel more optimism. To take greater pleasure in your animal nature (eg exercise, sex, food, sleep). To enjoy greater control over your own destiny. And, of course, the career benefits to be enjoyed from greater efficiency and effectiveness. We can all benefit from increased relaxation. Perhaps surprisingly, this isnt hard to come by. As a hypnotherapist I treat people for a range of conditions, and the consistent response from my clients is yes, you helped me with my condition, and Ive also discovered again how much fun life can be. Stress reduction is a side effect, a by-product, for many hypnotherapy clients. If you wish, it could also be the main event. Look after yourself. Its a short life and its here to be enjoyed. Consider hypnotherapy. Consider meditation. Above all, look honestly within yourself to identify sources of anxiety. Dont be embarrassed, or feel guilty, simply because you feel anxious. Its normal. Doing something positive about our background anxiety is possibly the most positive step any of us can make towards enjoying life more. The Misconception about Online Dating

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

By Richard Akindele So you’ve just joined an online dating site. You hurriedly, and half-heartedly fill out a profile with no picture, and then wait to be contacted. Several weeks go by, nothing. Now you are beginning to feel discouraged. Maybe people aren’t as desperate as you first thought. You return to the site to do some browsing, you pick out a few profiles, and contact the people. Still nothing after a few more weeks. You are now tempted to contact the same people over and over again, thinking they didn’t get your message the first time. But the fact is, they did, and repeated contacts is not advisable, as it’d portray you as desperate, controlling, or worse a stalker. Here are some things you may be doing wrong that are preventing you from getting a response. The people you are contacting do not know you. Your profile is the only thing they have to go by in evaluating your worth. Furthermore, these people have hundreds of other profiles to browse. If your profile is not up to par, they’d quickly move to the next. Does your profile include a photo? Does it include relevant information to help people know you? Does your profile demonstrate your seriousness of purpose in finding someone? Is the language in your description demeaning? Compare your dating profile to a job resume. You wouldn’t put out a lackluster resume and expect to be taken seriously by any employer would you? In that regard, liken your online dating experience to a job search and therefore make your profile as attractive as possible. A personal ads web site, http://www.oasisoflove.com keeps track of your past behavior on the site, and your record acts as a barometer for measuring how you are likely to act in future. The site keeps a record of how you’ve been responding to messages sent to you, and how quickly? The bottomline is, if you are failing at attracting responses on a dating site, the problem may be you. Revamp your image (profile), add a photo, reply to messages sent to you, and promptly. Be proactive and contact as many users as you can. www.oasisoflove.com is a free site, so there is nothing limiting your ability to contact many users. Richard Akindele is the Founder of http://www.oasisoflove.com, a full-featured, and FREE online dating site.
